About

The press that stays pressed.

Fireworks answers the first question a switch asks: does my press do something? The answer arrives, and then it is over. Light Board answers the question after it — does my press change something? A board somebody has lit is a thing they did that is still true a minute later, and pressing the same bulb a second time to turn it off again is the first undo many early AAC learners are ever handed.

Every bulb is a real target, because which light is the whole activity. An eye-gaze user lights the one they are looking at; a switch user scanning by group steps into the wall and then along it. There is still one enormous button for a player who cannot aim at all — it lights the next dark bulb in reading order, so the lights come on along a row — and once the board is full it becomes the way to clear it and start again.

Every light has its own note, lowest at the bottom left and highest at the top right, so a player who cannot pick one bulb out of twenty-four still hears roughly where on the board the press landed. The board itself glows warmer as it fills, which means the press changes something larger than the button it landed on — and that is what a player whose vision does not resolve one small bulb has to go on. Filling the whole board earns a celebration nobody had to aim for.

Choose six, fifteen or twenty-four lights to match how precisely this player can aim, and switch between warm filament bulbs and colour lights, which give every button its own identity for a learner working on telling one from another.

Works with touch, a mouse, a single switch, two-switch scanning, or eye-gaze dwell. Dwell time on this board has a floor built in, because on a toggle a wobbling gaze would turn a light on and straight back off again. Scan speed, dwell time, target size and spoken praise are in the app's Settings panel and can be saved per player on the device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
